MY "NEW-FANGLED" MAP MAKING INSTRUCTIONS
OK, you are looking at this page because you want to make your first Battlezone map. I will try to go step-by-step showing you the methods I use to get results. If you have made maps before, you will notice I go about it a little differently, but thats because I prefer double clicking a shortcut to typing, and retyping alot of DOS commands. This tutorial assumes you already have some computer experience and understand things like "cut", "copy" & "paste", dragging and renaming files, etc. We'll make a small DM map.
STEP ONE: Copy the executable file MakeTRN.exe from the Battlezone\Edit folder and paste it into your \addon folder. Create a shortcut to MakeTRN.exe. That's pronounced "make terrain". To the right is a picture of that in progress before I clicked the mouse. (I usually hit the M key on the keyboard and then used the context menu key on the keyboard to get the menu, and S for Create Shortcut. Since MakeTRN.exe is the first file under M that works out well for me. Your file will already be hilighted because you just pasted it in, so hit Context then S right away.)

STEP TWO: Drag the shortcut to your desktop, right click on it and choose Properties. Edit the Target line, adding in the text "multdm02 /c /w=1280 /h=1280" being sure there is a space between what you just added and the quote mark at the end of what was already in there. There are also spaces before each forward slash. In this picture, I have highlighted the new text for clarity. Notice I didn't actually type in any of my own quote marks, just the text. Click Apply and OK to close the Properties window.

NOTE: You can make maps of different sizes: 1280, 2560, 3840, and 5120 The smallest size is best for deathmatch maps, unless you have lots of people playing on it. The last three sizes are best for usrmsn (1 player) and strategy type maps.

STEP THREE: Double click the shortcut to MakeTRN.exe. Depending on the speed of your computer, and the size of your map, you will see a DOS window flash by. If you could see what was going on in there, it would look something like this:
Note that MakeTRN.exe has generated the three basic files needed to make a complete Battlezone map, which are: the multdm02.MAT or materials file, the multdm02.HGT or height file, the multdm02.TRN or terrain file. These files will be saved by MakeTRN.exe in your addon folder.

Remember, you cannot execute MakeTRN.exe by double clicking on it. The DOS screen will flash by, but it will be paragraphs describing why it didn't work... basically useless. You MUST either execute MakeTRN.exe through the DOS Prompt (see pic above), or through the shortcut which we edited to contain the DOS commands.
STEP FOUR: Edit the multdm.02TRN file. Since this is the first time you are editing a .TRN file, the Open With dialog box will pop up. Select Notepad, and check "Always use this program to open this file" and click OK. See? ---> When the multdm02.TRN file opens, delete everything but the [Size] section. It will look then like this: (below)

Now go to the \trn folder located in the Battlezone\Edit folder. Inside there are seven planet types to choose from. You should recognize the names from playing the Battlezone game. Open the one you choose, click Edit > Select All, then Edit > Copy, and go to multdm02.TRN and click Edit > Paste. Click File > Save (not Save As) to save the changes and close it. One more step untill we actually edit the map itself!
STEP FIVE: Go back to the Battlezone folder, hilight the bzone.exe file and Create Shortcut the same way we made a shortcut to MakeTRN.exe. Next, drag the shortcut to your desktop, right-click on it and rename it as EDIT multdm02 (usrmsn02 maps get a PLAY shortcut too). Right-click it again and choose Properties. Edit the "Target" line adding in the text "multdm02 /edit /win /nointro" as shown in the next picture, and Apply the changes. As before, the changes are hilighted only for clarity. See the space right after the quote mark? It must be there just like before, and there is a space before each forward slash.

the /edit flag opens the editor, as opposed to playing the map the /win flag starts the editor in a window instead of full-screen the /nointro flag prevents the Intro movie from playing
EXTRA INFORMATION:
STEP SIX: Starting the Battlezone Map Editor. WARNING: If you use a high-end graphics accelerator, you may need to turn it off inside the game shell under Options > Graphic Options to see all the Editor functions properly. Exit the game to save the changes. NOTE: You should be able to minimize the editor window with the Windows key. READY? Double click the EDIT multdm02 shortcut. When you do, the Map Editor License Agreement window will pop up before the actual Editor opens. Read the agreement, (your choice though) and click Accept.
